02_about the experiment & new dm lab product & cutting system_

the mission_

as an artist first — and as a brand — i need the daniel mostyn lab to do more than make cool products.

it has to turn the dial.
it has to build better cutters.
it has to build future cutters.
and it has to hand over a system that creates thinkers, experimenters, and artists.

this experiment introduces that system — a new way of approaching cutting, product choice (for both pros and consumers), and styling.

the system is called form → formula → finish — three stages engineered to finally connect education, technique, and product usage for both the artist behind the chair and the client at home.

​

to support it, we built the daniel mostyn lab styling range: a re-thought, stripped-back, multi-function, multi-layering line where each product shifts behaviour based on the cut, the texture, and the pairing.

no names. no noise. no false promises; just a_ b_ c_ d_ e_ f_ g_ —

products engineered to plug directly into one system: form → formula → finish.

this framework comes from 26 years of dismantling and rebuilding the way hairdressing behaves — testing, failing, refining — all to answer one question:

why aren’t form, formula, and finish connected?

every great product in existence exists to solve a problem for its users.
here are the problems we see  — and why this system needed to be built:

1_ form (the haircut)
pro pain: no ongoing cutting education, no repeatable inspiration, a constant search for trusted cutting foundations.
consumer pain: no fresh ideas, inconsistent results, wanting more influence over the creative direction of their look, on an ongoing bases.

2_ formula (the product)
pro pain: products that don’t relate to the cut, retail clients can buy anywhere, “one product fits every style” syndrome, no deeper purpose or connection to the products used on each haircut. 
consumer pain: overwhelmed by choice, confused by marketing noise and false promise product naming, faced with hundreds of bottles of empty promises — none connected to their goal look, haircut, or texture.

3_ finish (the styling)
pro pain: defaulting to hot tools, lack of finishing discipline, no link between the finish, the cut, or the chosen product.
consumer pain: not knowing what to use, how it behaves, or how to style their own hair with confidence. sick of reading size 6 font on a bottle to make it work or turning to tiktok to learn how to make their products work at home & lack of clear guidance.
